How to Naturally Control Bugs During the Summer

Summertime brings nature alive. While you may be delighted to have different flowers, birds, and trees, pests like mosquitoes and flies can be bothersome. Whether you want to enjoy a summer evening on your deck or grow a garden, here are some ways to help manage pests naturally without harming pollinators and using harsh chemicals.

Flowers are Friends

Flowers are a beautiful, natural pest control solution. Try growing some of these flowers to help naturally control pests:

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums not only add a beautiful array of colors to your garden, but they are also a natural source of pyrethrin, a key ingredient in many commercial insect repellants.

Marigolds

Marigolds are cheap and relatively easy to obtain from many home and garden retailers. Their vibrant yellow and orange hues add a beautiful burst of outdoor color. Scented varieties, such as the French Marigold, can repel pests such as whiteflies, mosquitoes, and nematodes, and more.

Herbs Aren't Just for Cooking

Herbs not only make a delicious addition to meals, but they also make an effective natural pest repellent, both inside and outside the home. Pest repelling herbs include mint varieties, rosemary, basil, lavender, and dill.

Put Natural Predators to Work

Instead of stressing out, you can just let the natural circle of life run its course! Birds and bats, for example, are a natural, cost-effective way to control pests.

Birds

Many birds feast on insects, such as worms, beetles, aphids, crickets, spiders, and more. To invite birds to your yard, set out a birdhouse with a feeder and water. Many birds are also attracted to certain trees, shrubs, and plants, especially during nesting time when they feed their young.

Bats

Did you know that a single bat can eat up to 8,000 insects in one night? In addition to pest control, their droppings, or guano, make an excellent fertilizer for your garden. Instead of purchasing guano, you can invite bats and have a free supply. You can attract bats by building bat houses or planting fragrant, sweet-smelling plants such as honeysuckle.
